Breeding ‘Baltic Gulls’ from the Horsvær archipelago in Norway
Carl Baggott, Morten Helberg and Mars Muusse describe the status of the Lesser Black-backed Gulls breeding in the Horsvær archipelago, an important colony in northwest Norway, from which at least 15 colour-marked individuals have been sighted in Britain. The appearance, migration patterns and moult strategy of the ‘Horsvær gulls’ are consistent with nominate fuscus, or ‘Baltic Gull’.
Report on scarce migrant birds in Britain in 2016: passerines
This report presents data on scarce passerine migrants recorded in Britain during 2016. Perhaps the most notable event of the year was the prolonged pattern of easterly winds that resulted in wave after wave of scarce migrants originating from Asia reaching Britain’s shores throughout October, and resulted in new record totals for four of those species: Yellow-browed Warbler, Siberian Chiffchaff, Dusky Warbler and Little Bunting.
Western Swamphen: new to Britain
A Western Swamphen was discovered at Minsmere RSPB reserve, Suffolk, on 31st July 2016. Its arrival coincided with an unprecedented dispersal of Western Swamphens into central and northern France, north of the breeding areas in southern Europe.
The ‘Purple Swamphen’ in Britain
This short paper summarises the taxonomic history, distribution and status of the ‘Purple Swamphen’ complex. It documents all the British records of swamphens assessed by BBRC and BOURC.
Notes Plumages and calls of ‘Hornemann’s Redpolls’
Letters Jizz: another early use; Aircraft recognition and ‘jizz’; Genetic studies of ‘Siberian Chiffchaff’
Book reviews, News & comment and Recent reports complete the September issue.
