Hi all,

I have return from a tour from Argentina and I would like to share with you a few experiences.

First of all, Argentina is a wonderful country, with splendid landscapes and a lot of birds.

I have visited the NW region, with different habitats in a short distance.

The extreme South, Ushuaia, does not report many different birds but they are very specific ones so I believe that it is a must to visit it.

Buenos Aires province and the nearby Entre Ríos province is also a place that is worth visiting. Many birds not far from an international airport.

I would like to share with you the contact details of some guides. I usually try to look for this kind of information as I do not travel with agencies but on my own sometimes with the local support of local independent guides.

I would add that the food, culture and people are as top notch as the birding, nature and landscapes - especially if you enjoy rock music, football and beer/wine with your empanadas.

A good friend, Marcelo Gavensky, has over a period of time put Argentina at the top of our list for birding expeiences - guiding us briefly around Buenos Aires (en route to Ushuaia and the Antarctic) then organising a 4 week Best of Argentina trip for two of us, using his contacts with local guides developed in his time with Aves Argentina. This year we travelled with him in Bolivia for 5 weeks, including a visit to the Blue Throated Macaw Reserve by land that delivered Maned Wolf and Giant Anteater as well as our target birds. He was both professional and thorough in looking after our welfare whilst being great company and an enthusiastic expert birder.

He has been trying to develop a fuul-time living from bird guiding over recent years and has a web site at

and a blog at

Arentina is an excellent coutry for bird watching.
Birds are much closer than in Europe or Asia.
But it seems it get very expensiv in the last years.
Awful cars like Chevrolet costs >1.300 Euro for 4 weeks with full insurance.
Toyota Etios more than 1.600 Euro per month.

For anyone coming from US or EU or similar it ha gotten quite a bit cheaper the past two years actually due to inflation here making the exchange rate more favorable for visitors. Car Rental is more expensive pretty much everywhere in the world than it is Europe. The one country I can think of that is as affordable as EUrope for car rental is South Africa...

I think rent car is in Thailand, US and Emirates cheaper than in Europe.
Also petrol is cheaper.
E.g. 3,5 weeks in November 2018 costs 680 Euro for Toyota Hilux, included premium insurance.
