Is this a cucumber moth (1 Viewer)

Now abundant in the London area + beyond. A serious pest of box hedging. This morning we had a normal form like yours + a dark melanic form in traps in Ealing + found some larvae in the gardens at Richmond Park.

That gold border is quite unique to any moth I,ve seen before I think its a stunning creature even thou its a pest... Has this moth been in the uk long ?

Not that long. Apparently the first moth wasn't found here until 2008 + larvae were first found in private gardens in 2011 so has spread very rapidly. Last year I saw large numbers. I've seen less this year but that may be a consequence of gardeners now spraying box hedges to try + save them.

The larvae are said to be unpleasant to the taste of birds + mammals.

It's a trick of the light. The moth is translucent white with dark brown edging.
