1st for the garden!! (1 Viewer)

We put out a mixed seed, sunflower seeds, peanuts and monkey nuts for our wide variety of birds in our garden (29 species so far) since September. This morning we had our 1st Hawfinch!! Our question is, is the type of food we put out sufficient for this bird? It came in with a pair of Bullfinch and seemed quite happy to eat the sunflower seeds. However, is this food good enough for it or do we need something extra to attract this magnificent bird on a regular basis?

Any ideas would be very welcome.

I dont know much about a Hawfinches diet, but it seems to like big seeds and nuts...and the food you put out seems good?

Hi Seb,

That's about right, ideally 57 different varieties - variation in their diet is what they like above all else

Hi Gaz.
You are one very lucky person to have a visiting Hawfinch!! he says green with envy, your mix of food seems to be good, but they have been known to enjoy the kernels of cherries, they can crack these with no problem as they can generate over 50kg forcewith that powerful bill.
they also like insects.

Hi seb-seb.
They do take a small amount of insects as part of diet, and the young are fed on a diet of insects and soft seeds until their bills develop the strength to cope with the harder nuts. the muscle structure
and make up of the bill in these birds is incredible.
of the finch family these boys are the hard nuts!!
