INDIGENOUS Communities ARE Better At Preserving Biodiversity, Research Shows (1 Viewer)

When are the mods going to move this thread to RF?

Why should this be going to RF?

It's not about any kind of personal vitriol, but Chosun highlighting conservation issues (albeit with some kind of historical racial slant at times and in her own particular style).

Have to admit I broadly agree with the majority of the issues highlighted and their causes. Western society and capitalist values are screwing the planet. Doesn't really matter that if it wasn't the 'western ideals' it would have quite probably been some other culture which did so at some point.

This thread may be a bit Aussie-centric, but that is kind of implicit.

Thanks DTM - that's exactly the point.

At this present time this particular country is drained of water, dug up, and on fire .... all for profit. This is despite being a 'first-world' country, desite having a green and environmental movement pretty much as good as any other in the world, despite having environmental protection laws that are better than those in the majority of the world, and despite being governed by a so-called 'democratic' system and rule of law. Why?

It's like cutting off all your digits and limbs one by one and selling them for the profit of today ..... hardly a long term strategy for prosperous sustainable survival ..... :cat:

Andy .... if you have something on topic to contribute then please do so - otherwise quit trolling my threads.

The Rapid Decline Of The Natural World Is A Crisis Even Bigger Than Climate Change

https://m.huffingtonpost.com.au/ent...lnYcedpzkDoMTpn627t8mh5WDbHOkWIj7RZ5QQq_m_K9A

"A three-year UN-backed study from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform On Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has grim implications for the future of humanity."

" Nature is in freefall and the planet’s support systems are so stretched that we face widespread species extinctions ...."

"The felling of forests, the over-exploitation of seas and soils, and the pollution of air and water are together driving the living world to the brink,"

"... tens of thousands of species are at high risk of extinction, how countries are using nature at a rate that far exceeds its ability to renew itself,

""We are at a crossroads. The historic and current degradation and destruction of nature undermine human well-being for current and countless future generations,” ..... “Land degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change are three different faces of the same central challenge: the increasingly dangerous impact of our choices on the health of our natural environment.”

"Indigenous communities often know best how to conserve nature ...."
“What surprised me the most about this study was that it became clear that the older cultures, like the indigenous peoples of the Americas, have different values which protect nature better [than Western societies],”"

"Ultimately, Watson concludes that saving nature will require a major rethink of how we live and how we think about nature,"

To address the ecological crisis, Aboriginal peoples must be restored as custodians

https://theconversation.com/to-addr...FmXMVIE_tBsYFk2wHnZwOxhjrwXb9m9yLVWEepVmtueE4

"In the wake of devastating bushfires across the country, and with the prospect of losing a billion animals and some entire species, transformational change is required in the way we interact with this land."

"The devastation was caused by the gross mismanagement ...... by those in power – a destruction wrought through greed."

"First Peoples have a relationship with Country that is loving, reciprocal and engaged. This “kincentric” relationship includes custodianship obligations – often lacking within non-Indigenous views of Country. Instead of being seen as kin – something to be cared for, listened to, deeply respected and nurtured – Country is seen by many non-Indigneous people as a resource to be exploited and controlled."

When conservation provides a cover for anti-Indigenous sentiments

Do any of our US correspondents have any context or conservation data to add in relation to these environs, or indeed the push for energy resources by current political forces .... ? :cat:

Surely, if ever a thread belonged in Ruffled Feathers, this is it. . ..
Surely you troll. :storm:

How about making a comment on the article posted instead. :cat:

Tell us - how is your modern capitalist world working out for you ? - infinite growth model vs finite environment.

How are those developed world environmental laws working out for you? Preventing extinctions have/are they? How's the environmental health metrics trend looking these days? All hunky dory is it?

Not expecting any genuine answers, but the articles, questions, etc, posed are for those fair dinkum folk that actually give a shirt, and are perhaps open to learning something/ questioning the status quo/ changing their small lot and sphere of influence for the better .......... :brains:

My capitalist world??

Unrestrained (population) “growth” (as per the “article”) is indeed the problem as I and others have repeatedly pointed out in this and other threads. Unfortunately (also as per the article and also as I and others have repeatedly pointed out in this and other threads) there is nothing much to be done about it sans profound changes in human attitudes and behavior extremely unlikely to ever take place in other than catastrophic conditions. Not with a whimper but a bang. . ..

Ruffled Feathers, not for the sweet nothings in the earnest little article under discussion, but for the unremitting Noble Savage/New Age claptrap upthread

Repeated expressions of hate and disrespect for those who have a different background and perspective than yourself is much more a reason for BF management to sanction you than to recategorize the OP's strong interests in Conservation.
