Mystery wings...

Haven't really been able to look at any gulls for a few days so I thought I'd crop some old shots for you to have a go at...

hi morg,

long time ago we had such quizz fun.

1. ad intermedius or even fuscus, p9 half way, p10 just visible
2. looks like an ad fuscus (could be intermedius though)
3. ad michahellis
4. ad argenteus

this one has a strange pattern annomality for 1cy mich, cristian. large tertial thumbnails are produced by the middle outer portion of these TT: http://lou.bertalan.de/gulls/pic/hi/up_0130.jpg in this case darker than white edges.
and a weird GC pattern also, slightly reminding of this: http://chrisgibbins-gullsbirds.blogspot.com/2008/10/selection-of-odd-interesting-and-nice.html , more exactly this: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JXeDixaPw40/SO2ecyYADdI/AAAAAAAAAHg/jk7njl_FKg4/s1600/829K8688web.jpg which prob. is a mich!

Yes, I saw some earlier in the thread, wasn't sure whether it would be welcomed...

Anyway, I'd say that's a score of 1 out of 4 Lou... :eek!:

oh my...:-C

and: sure they're welcome!

new trial:

1. ad GBBG (white blotch can't be growing p10 cause it's above p9 and - i noticed the broad trailing edge on first view already...)
2. graellsii (such dark underside of remiges?)
3. graellsii
4. argenteus

:smoke:

jan, why don't have a try and get vulnurable too ;) ;)

california for 3
heuglini for 2 - although such dark remiges...ehm, alternatively occidentalis??? :-O )

(now i'm really gettin' into wandering the world)

Ok, I'll give you the UK pair that Lou has guessed correctly already...

and the other two are from further afield...

Lou

Sorry to be a bit sneaky by mixing up the continents a little, but, hats off to you, you have now guessed them all correctly at one point or another...

1. cape/kelp gull (Cape of Good Hope, RSA 29/4/07)
2. western/occidentalis (Santa Monica, CA, USA 9/4/10)
3. graellsii LBBG (Farne Islands, UK 1/7/08)
4. argenteus HG (Bass Rock, UK 12/6/07)

Here's nos 1 and 2 attached

Geoff

do you have more of that last 2cy cach? it seems to have growing p10s with small mirrors. but its bill tip is a bit "swollen" and high for pontic, in the first pic it even resembles the strong curvature of a mich upper mandible (of course due to angle!) and: it has paler getting irises which is highly unusual for 14 months old caspian gull!

[i'll try to phone you today, cristian. ..]

Four more pics with the bird. There are very small white mirrors on P10. IMHO, the iris looks pretty dark.
