I'm fascinated by large groups of birds especially when such numbers are unusual. Black Kites congregate in the Northern Territory of Australia when uncontrolled fires burn across wide areas of Savannah forest and grasslands. Back in 2013 in the Pilbara where Black Kites are less common there was a large irruption of them.

The previous post looks at unusually large gatherings of Great Egrets. Some herding animals normally live in large groups but others such as Black Kites and Great Egrets only come together when the conditions suit them and they seem to know the timing of when those conditions exist.
