Cooper's Hawk or Sharp Shinned Hawk?

These are two different hawks. I think one is a Sharpie the other a Cooper's, but not sure.

That's impressive. I stil have problems telling the difference.
I haven't yet marked either bird in my life list even though I've
I've seen both (probably). I just can never tell which species
I'm looking at.

I agree with Jeff on the IDs. Here is a website that should help you with the field marks: http://static.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/...terIDtable.htm

I agree with Jeff too. The Cooper's has a rounded tail, and streaking which gives out on the belly. The Sharp-shinned has a square tail.

Wow, never got that that kind of response before.

To be honest I have trouble with them perched, but I'm a volunteer hawkwatcher, so flight shots are easier for me, especially good ones like those. And Microtus nailed the reasons why each was each.

Another good book just for raptors is the famous:

Hawks From Every Angle (how to identify raptors in flight)--by Jerry Liguori

good book for about $12

and yes, I agree...Coopers left, Sharpie right.
