UV and polarising filters: Canon, Hoya or other? (1 Viewer)

I intend to get a few filters for my various lenses: UV mainly as skylight, polarising for fun. But I've been put off by the cost of the proprietary Canon filters. Hoya and - eek - Jessops are much cheaper. But how does the quality compare? Which are better value for money?

There has been a long discussion recently on the forum as to whether filters degrade the image. Some are convinced they do, some they do not. Therefore, if you are to get filters, inspite of the cost, then buy the best. In my opinion B & W are the best.

Filters

Filters may degrade the picture very slightly but if you have used it to improve an aspect of the picture you are taking the improvement will usually offset the degradation, and any noticeable degradation can usually be fixed in Photoshop or Elements etc.

I have some filters which were very inexpensive and came from 7dayshop.com. I am well pleased with them and feel there are good value.

The more expensive ones like Hoya Pro are very thin and reduce vignetting at extreme wide angles. I bought mine on EBay from some Chinese company - no problems and about half the price of Jessops !
