Hello from central Ohio, USA (1 Viewer)

Today, I decided to look for a birding forum and found this one. The international membership here is a bit amazing.

I'm over 60 but just made the decision this summer to delve into what I consider some significant bird watchting and, I can truly say, it's been a fascinating experience. I bougbt a binocular which, of course, has been tremendously helpful.

The "State Bird" for Ohio is the Northern Cardinal. I've often wondered why the cardinal has this desgination here because I, like most people, as far as I know, really don't see this bird much. Indeed, based on sightings, it's easy to get the impression that the cardinal is a actually rare bird here. Well, my experience in the last 4 - 6 weeks have made me aware that this delightful bird is more common than sightings lead one to believe. My awareness increased when I learned to recognize sounds made by cardinals. That's when I realized some cardinals are in the area everyday. I'm sure I've also seen more of them in the last 6 weeks than I've seen in my entire life before this time. Just today, I had saw cardinals 4 times, all males.

Similarly, I absolutely sure I've seen more American Goldfinch in the last 6 weeks than I've ever seen before this time. I can't recall how many of them I saw today in trees but I, as nearly as I can recall, about 7-10 sitings in trees. In addtion, I saw many in fliight, more than in trees.

Hello David, and welcome to the forum. This is definitely a hobby that sneaks up on you but in a good way.

Hi David and a warm welcome to you from Myrtle Beach :t:

I'm surprised at your No. Cardinal population. With dozens here, I guess it's easy to take for granted that they are just as plentiful elsewhere.

Hi David and a warm welcome from me too

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I'll look forward to hearing all your news.
