Black redstarts (1 Viewer)

Oh yes, usually while they make their little "whee-chack-chack" call. When I'm in Spain during the winter months, they are second only to the Spuggies as the commonest bird around our urbanisation. This bobbing activity goes on all the time but most often around sunrise and sunset - usually followed by lots of chasing each other round the houses.

Saw the bobbing in Italy. Quite incessant. And it was also making a noise at that time as posted earlier. Wonder why they do it? I thought it was to do with refraction for Dippers.

I have at least 4 wintering Black Redstarts in my neighbourhhod and I practically see them on a dialy basis.:t:

I regularly hear them doing their typical alarm call and constant bobbing. I think it is typical of this species. They also love doing it after landing and after being chased by other black redstarts in the same area.

Also, quite interesting is the fact that In Malta we only get females wintering with us at this time of the year while the males are only seen on migration in March and autumn!Wonder whats the reason behind this too...

Black redstarts are everywhere here in winter. Bobbing seems normal behaviour and they do it all the time, especially when landing or calling.
