Father Erwin (Schmutz) and "his" new Short-toed Snake-eagle (1 Viewer)

Björn Bergenholtz

(former alias "Calalp")
Sweden
Circaetus gallicus sacerdotis, Ng et al 2017

See today's Bird Taxonomy and Nomenclature Forum, here.

Rev. Erwin Schmutz (born 1932, in Ingolstadt/Eichstätt), German (Catholic) missionary, pharmacist, naturalist (herpetologist, ornithologist, botanist), collector etc., who worked on the Island Flores Indonesia from 1963 until at least 1986. ... here (p.221) ... and possibly (?) still alive in 2013 (here). In Australia?

If of any use?

Nope, he was the oldest missionizing Naturalist known in History, ever ... ;)

Of course your remark is correct. As is my Post #1. Now.

Thanks Paul, for keeping an orderly eye on things.

Fr. Schmutz was certainly active in 1991, when I was in correspondence with his fellow missionary Fr. Verheijen (see sacerdotum in the Key).

Father Erwin was at first a druggist, studied theology from 1956-62, and set out for Indonesia as Steyler Missionary (Societatis Verbi Divini) at Flores (Lesser Sunda Islands) in 1963. Specimens ended up by Jilis Verheijen.
From 1964 onwards in W. Manggarai, Flores.-1968. Trip to Timor (June-Aug.): Atapupu (14 June), Atambua, Atapupu (16) (Kolo Guerita), Mota Buik (river between Atambua and Nenuk Lalina), Lahurus (20), ascent of the Laka’an (1585 m; 21) and descent on the W. slope: Mota Oé (river; 25); Lalian Nenuk and Mota Telau (25), Kefamenanu (28), Tua Mésé, direction Mutis to Oeolo (700 m; 30); ascent G. Mutis (July 3-4; 2427 m); Soé (10; 1200 m) and Nikiniki (12; 750 m); from Soé to Kupang (14); to Roté (= Roti) (17-20); return to Kupang (staying 27 July – 2 Aug); to Maumere by plane (4 Aug.); Centr. Flores (8-30 Aug.), visiting Lomblem (= Lomblen) (13); return in W. Flores (31 Aug.).
G.F. Mees described; Besra Accipiter virgatus quinquefasciatus (1984) Holotype RMNH from a bird from Schmutz.
In Leiden 238 specimens arrived directly or via J.A.J. Verheijen, some specimens are labelled with University of San Carlos in Cebu.

Mees named the Flores Monarch Symposiachrus sacerdotum for Fr. Schmutz (1973).

Zool. Meded. Rijksmus. Nat. Hist. Leiden 46, 1973, p.179

And, James (Jobling), the Key of today isn't yet fully synchronized, regarding the Short-toed Snake-Eagle ssp. Circaetus gallicus sacerdotis Ng et al., 2017, in comparison to the Flores Monarch Symposiachrus sacerdotum (Mees, 1973):
sacerdos / sacerdotis
L. sacerdos, sacerdotis priest < sacer, sacra holy.
● ...
● Revd. Fr. Erwin Schmutz (b. 1932) German missionary, naturalist, botanist, collector on Flores, Indonesia (subsp. Circaetus gallicus).
● ...

sacerdotum
L. sacerdotum of the priests < sacerdos, sacerdotis priest < sacer, sacra holy.
● Revd. Fr. Jilis Antonius Josephus Verheijen (1908-1997) Dutch missionary and Revd. Fr. Erwin Schmutz (1932-2022) German missionary, both naturalists, botanists and collectors on the island of Flores, Indonesia (Symposiachrus).

Just an observation ...
