Hi there,

I saw this toad in the Serra da Estrela NP, Portugal. Initially thought Natterjack but Iberian Midwife then crossed my mind.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

The known ranges of Iberian Midwife Toad Alytes cisternasii and that of Common Midwife Toad Alytes obstetricans meet roughly near Serra da Estrela. Altitude may make a difference, so if yours was over about 800m its more likely to be Common. Saying that, yours does look like an Iberian - but IIRC the way to separate them for sure is by the number of warts on the "palm of the hand". here's a photo of an Iberian I took in the Algarve a long time ago - with the palm.
