This afternoon I stopped by a nearby farm pond. It’s almost completely frozen over, with just a small patch of open water. However, that little bit of water is just what water birds need, and some good ones were congregated there.

This morning while running some errands, I picked up a new bird for the year in the parking lot of a shopping center.

70. Ring-billed Gull

Then on my way home I stopped by a farm pond close to where I live and found a Preston County lifer (number 235). It was also the first ever record of the species for the county.

71. Mute Swan

I actually haven't managed any birding as such and all my observations so far have been from cars, buses or looking out the window. Looks like we are getting a break from the cold and snow this morning. Its raining again

So far this has been a slow year. Lately I seem to add new birds one or two at a time. This morning I only managed to find one new bird for the year.

72. American Tree Sparrow
