Andy's field sketches (3 Viewers)

I use A4 Daler-Rowner sketchbooks too, the black hardcover ones. They're excellent and although they're a bit pricier than cheapo pads from Tesco, I have no worries about making a mess of them - that's what sketchbooks are for! A5's too small, A3's a bit big for me (going against the flow here).

Went back down to Saltram yesterday and did these of the curlew
that gather on Baxton meadow at high tide.

not as good as I had hoped but they were way off so was hard to get a really good view. ( thats my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Got some good photo's today though so that makes up for it a little

Sorry its been some time since I added anything to this thread
people but I've been a little to busy in the studio and working
on a design prodject I'm involved with.

Anyhow , went to Wales on Thurs, Fri of this week on buisness and managed
a little field work while I was away,.

Good omen from the start was on the way up to Carmarthen
around the Cross Hands area I saw
a lovely Red kite pass over the main carrige way . I pulled over as quick as
I could and got some views from the side of the
hard shoulder. Managed a quick drawing while everything was fresh
in my mind. Don't know if it would have gone down well with the Local Plod
though!! if they'd asked what I was doing.

Then went on to Carmarthen to stay with friends managed to
get out to one of their Peregrine nest sites. The young were
still around luckily and I got some good views of a young
tiercel. the only other stuff I got done was of swallows that
were nesting in one of the barns at the property I stayed at
while away.

here they are for you all

More fantastic stuff Andrew. For pencil on paper they sure take on real life feeling. Amazing! Thanks for sharing.

fantastic, I'm particularly fond of the kite, I can feel the wind beneath its wings (gone all Bette Middler) and the big swallow on the first page is simply stunning.

You were in my neck of the woods there Andy. We are lucky to see alot of kites. Its beem a tremendous conservation success.
Especially like your swallows.

Another great set of sketches Andy, am with the others on the red kites, a bird I'm particularly fond of as I live at the heart of Gateshead's reintroduction scheme, and must say you've captured the effortless flow of the wings beautifully.

Really great sketches Andy. I got stuck in a traffic jam on the A40 a couple of years ago, I watched 5-6 red kites through the sunroof for about 20 minutes. The very best traffic jam I've ever been in!

Hi Andrew,

actually I wanted to let my comments, since your first appearance in Birdforum,
but my very limited time didn't allow me to do it.
I knew your paintings from "Birds in Art", or "Wildlife Art" mag. where I noticed
your ability to represent your subject using unusual angles, movement and perspective, which the most artists avoid because they lack of knowledge and training.
These field sketches proof how great artist you are, show what is hiding behind
your successful work.

Thanks for sharing and I hope you'll post us more!

Andy

Love your sketches and they are well portrayed!

The detail in them makes the subject look alive. The type of bird you are sketching is very apparant to me.

Love to see more :-O

sorry people didnt chedk back on this one till now. shit its late!!!
or should I say early!! no doubt you nite owls will be still
up working on those bottles of plonk!, and workin of course.
I'm knackered so will retire shortly.

I'll say thanks for the wonderful praise and get back to you
on the moro! Get on with Hoopoe Lark tomorow can't wait!

Really strong work, your ability to sketch birds in flight is rather special. Swallows are just great.
Have been viewing you Moussiers Redstarts on the Morroccon thread, terrific stuff, could look at it all day. Look forward the the Hoopoe Lark!

Those flight sketches of the Swallows are brilliant Andy! Not least because of the difficulty in capturing hirundines with a camera or staying on them with binos, cf. to many other species - to my uneducated eye (never tried to draw them), these must be amongst the hardest birds to pin down on the spot flight gizz shapes as you have done - I love the way they are crowded onto the page too - such typical flocking!
