Would be interested in peoples thoughts on this one, taken along the river at Danum Valley, Sabah on 20th March. Not wanting to bias opinion, so will initially refrain from saying my exact thoughts.

Cheers

Adult female Malaysian Blue Flycatcher IMO.

Grahame

Thanks Graham

Options for the area should be Bornean Blue, Large-billed Blue and Malaysian. Phillips has Mangrove as a largely coastal resident, though states that it is sometimes found inland, whilst Tickell's is also included, but apparently doesn't occur on the Bornean mainland.

Pretty safe to say that its not Large billed Blue. Looked too pale for Bornean Blue and also lacked the darker lores and ear coverts. Two birds initially seen together, both with blue upperparts. Assuming these were a pair, that would also safely rule out Bornean Blue.

By process of elimination I would say that you are correct with Malaysian, unless anyone else thinks differently?

Didn't copy all for some reason.

Grahame is correct, it's a female Malaysian. Note that the orange throat is quite pale, and also extent of orange on the underparts - doesn't extend further than the breast.
In addition, note that orange reaches bill base (certain species there is a blue chin, ie Large-billed).

Mangrove is at Danum Valley - we photographed a roosting bird there last year, despite never seeing, or hearing, it there previously. It is really a coastal forest and oil palm edge species though.
