Trench Wood and surrounding areas (1 Viewer)

Fairly quiet in trench Wood itself yesterday - a Spotted flycatcher and Willow Warbler in a very limited search.

a few Yellowhammers seen in the surrounding areas, Lesser Whitethroat and other Warblers. Another brood of 5 fledged Swallows.

Greater Butterfly Orchids now in bloom (2), loads of Common Spotted. Pyramidal Orchids just starting to come through at the crossroads near Himbleton (Littlebrook - Trench Lane)

Spent an hour or so around Trench Wood this afternoon and got completely soaked in the process. Best birds were 2 Marsh Tit seen near to where we parked the car (not main car park).

Other birds seen were Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow, Woodpigeon, Blackbird, Redwing, Starling, Robin and Pheasant.

2 Meadow Pipit were also seen on overhead cables next to the road.

Further highlights from this morning:

A further Spotted Flycatcher along the Worcs - Birmingham canal plus 6 Reed Warblers and 2 more Cuckoos. Another Garden Warbler in the Poplar plantation.
Lots of Common Whitethroats, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, more Willow Warblers and 2 more Yellowhammers. Reed Buntings, Buzzards, Swallows and Kestrel. Ravens over.

2 marsh tits around the car park this afternoon, willow warblers, blackcaps & lots of chiffchaffs also present. A buck roe deer ran across the field to the north when disturbed by the farmer

Just out of interest when did Nightingales last breed there? Come to think of it when and where did the last breed, or are they still breeding, in Worcestershire?

I used to visit several ‘coppice with standards’ managed woods in the area that held the species in the 80’s:-C

Two or three spotted flycatchers just to the west of the pond this afternoon. In with a mixed flock that also included one or two marsh tits.
