Professor Vidal's Little Owl and "his" invalid Orphean Warbler (1 Viewer)

Björn Bergenholtz

(former alias "Calalp")

Additional tiny, details (nothing major) on ...

vidalii and vidali as in:
• the subspecies Athene noctua vidalii BREHM 1857 (here) as "Ath. [Athene] Vidalii" ... see foot-note (all (in Latin):
*)Ignatio Vidali, Professori academico ordinario, Musei zoologici Valenciae Directori, vire doctissimo et amico maxime amabile hanc avem, sapientii symbolum dedicant pater et filii Brehm.
Also described here, this time in German, from 1858, as "Athene Vidali" (single-i, at the end):
*) Der Herr Professor Dr. Vidal in Valencia, welcher sieh nicht nur durch Anlegung einer zoologischen Universitätssammlung, sondern auch durch eine Schrift über die Vögel Südspaniens um die Ornithologie sehr verdient gemacht hat, wird uns erlauben, diesen Kauz, nach griechischer Meinung ein Bild der Weisheit, nach seinem berühmten Namen zu nennen.
• the invalid "Curruca Vidali" BREHM 1857 (1856), here [synonym of Sylvia hortensis GMELIN 1789]:
**) Der Hr. Prof. Vidal an der Universitat la Valencia, der einzige ornithologische Schriftsteller Spaniens, wird uns erlauben, diese geringe Huldigung seinen Verdiensten darzubringen.
... which ought to be the Spanish ornithologist and zoologist Professor, Dr. Ignacio Vidal (18151859) a k a Ignacio Vidal y Cros, alt. Ignacio Vidal Cros, of the University of Valencia, Curator of Mineralogy and Zoology (from 1846 until his death), one of the men (founders?) behind the Museum of Natural History of the same University.

Anyone who think otherwise?

Either way; enjoy!

Björn

Interesting name inconsistency here...
In the species' binomen, the apparent genitive Vidalii implies a dedicatee going by the second-declension name Vidalius, -ii in Latin.
But in the dedication, Vidali is a third-declension dative, which implies that the genitive should be Vidalis. (Vidal, -alis, declined on the same model as, e.g., Hannibal, -alis.)
