I saw two off these this evening, I had also seen them about a week before also. They were both very very scaredy and wouldn't let me get anywhere near them. If I got too close they would smimply fly 40 yards away. When they were flying they were calling also. The flight was very rapid flaps followed by a short spell without.

I assum its not a chafinch due to the call and flight.

Thanks Paynie

It's not easy to be sure from this photo, but I get the impression of Redpoll. Small beak and 'dumpy' appearance, head merging into body. Also flight style and call in flight makes me thinks it's this.
The flight call (my impression) is chew-chew-chew....chew-chew-chew....chew-chew-chew (makes me think of a small machine gun).

Linnets do call (that finch-type squeak if you know what I mean :-O) when they fly but you might well be right. If it isn't a linnet, it's a redpoll. The bill does look small but I was wondering if it might be a trick of the light. The head looked quite grey to me which is why I thought linnet but the photo is poor. But definitely one of the two - at least the red chest is definitely there! 'Small machine gun' - I like it! It always reminds me of an old sewing machine. :-O

Brightened up a bit. Looks like a Linnet to me.

Indeed it does.

Good stuff Sandra. You won't hear any excuses from me. ;)
