G B-b Gull with eye defect, Flamborough, England (1 Viewer)

Can anyone tell me what has caused the eye defect on this Great Black-back? The other eye looked OK, but the bird itself seemed sick; very lethargic. I don't think it's going to last very long.

Has it not just got its nictitating membrane part way across the eye? Was it stuck like that?

I'll take your word for the lethargy etc.

I think it probably is the nictitating membrane stuck, but what is causing that? It was like that all the time, and the bird definitely didn't seem well.

Infection, some kind of sticky eye condition?

I've seen many birds with manky eyes on my travels though often it appears not to impair them too much.
