Gitzo GH1720QR Head on 82mm scope? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Kinda confused. I have a Kowa TSN 823 82mm scope with a total weight of 4lbs/1.8kg. The Gitzo GH1720GR head load capacity is 8.8lbs/4kg. Reviews on line mention the GH1720 should not be used with at 80mm+ spotting scope. Is it the length of the scope that will cause problems?

I am looking for a light weight head for birding hikes.

Thanks,
Jeff

Talked to Eagle Optics and the rep said he knows of several birder's using the 1720 on large scopes without any problems. Ordered one so will see next week.

I use a GH1720 with a 4.5lb scope. The weight of the scope is no problem at all, but it can't reach the best balance point with the short QR plate that comes with the 1720, so I've substituted the longer plate that comes with the GH2720.

Hello

have you read this thread?

It may be of interest to you (the tiny Gitzo GH1720QR Head may be used with some 82mm scopes).

I use this head with the big Vortex Kaibab 15x56 HD bins but having also a Nikon Fieldscope ED82A did some tests and, as stated by other forumers, this combo works fine.

I saw that thread and read it 50:50 yea and nay. Which is why I was sitting on the fence.

I'll keep the plate in mind. Head should arrive Tuesday. Will field test it on a bird tour next weekend. Will just be car birding though. I might purchase the larger Gitzo for car birding down the road.

Much appreciated!

Gitzo head one day field tested and approved. Very fluid motions, locks solid. Great weight and seems to be made solid. Very stable with 30 MPH wind gusts. Looks like it is going to be a great head for a 82mm 4lb scope. Likely will purchase the above recommended plate that comes with the GH2720.

Much appreciated!
