went for a late one at the Flashes this evening, by the time we got through traffic lights at M5 it was late. so calling tonight 2 Green sand, Curlew, BHGs, Canada geese, Water rail from a distance north of the hide and possible 2 Barn Owls screeching south of the hide but not seen. At 19.00 some Canada geese flew out and at 19.15 something spooked the gulls and they all moved towards safer water of the 1 flash. warm evening with some small Bats flying along sailing pool path.
 
a bit of thrush movement this morning 400+ redwing and 15 fieldfare all moving NW .Whilst 6 swallow moved in the opposite direction. Also on the move mipits 4, siskin 3, Grey wag. Skylark 2, song thrush 2. . On the water the dog otter was causing mayhem amongst all the waterfowl, especially the coot almost herding them into the corners of the pool. Little grebe 7. GCG. cormorant 15. Greylag 46. shoveler 80. gadwall 2 males. teal 20. pochard 6 (5 male). tufted 17. coot 220. Snipe 4. lapwing 140. kestrel 2. Cetti's 3 singing.
 
quiet at Flashes this afternoon. No Shoveler when I arrived at 1.15. but 60 ish arrived at 2.45pm. Teal 72, coot 12. water rail, Avocet. Snipe. lapwing 153. Cetti's. lines 22. siskin. redwing and at least 30 redpoll landed in hen pool birches.
Early start tomorrow for a bit of VIS migging B :)

quiet at Flashes this afternoon. No Shoveler when I arrived at 1.15. but 60 ish arrived at 2.45pm. Teal 72, coot 12. water rail, Avocet. Snipe. lapwing 153. Cetti's. lines 22. siskin. redwing and at least 30 landed in hen pool birches.
Early start tomorrow for a bit of VIS migging B :)

Was the 30 in reference to Redpoll?
 
Gull roost tonight - BHG c.1100, Common Gull ad. & 1st W, Yellow-legged juv/1st W. Curlew 14, Avocet still otherwise much as John's earlier reports.
 
At the mid point of October we have already reached a very respectable total of 91 species. Other potential additions for the month include (year ticks in bold as always):

A winter swan or grey goose, Shelduck, Mandarin Duck, Pintail, Scaup, Merlin, Goldeneye, Goosander, Bittern, Golden Plover, Grey Plover, a passage wader such as Blackwit Ruff Redshank or Oystercatcher, Woodcock, Med Gull, GBB Gull, Little Owl, Short-eared Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Brambling, Mealy Redpoll

Was there any duplication in Lapwing numbers or do we have nearly 300 on the reserve John?

Gull roost dispersed by 7.30am. 4 Common Gull, Stonechat, 15 Curlew, Avocet, 2 Green Sandpiper
 
Further update from John at the Flashes:

Rock Pipit briefly, Redwing in groups totalling 150, 15 Fieldfare, 30 Redpoll, 3 Siskin, 5 Meadow Pipit

4 Common Gulls (ad, 1w x3), 2 Gadwall, 2 Coal Tits, 9 Meadow Pipit, 4 Skylark, 3 Redpoll, 27 Fieldfare, 97 Redwing
 
Totals for Flashes this morning 6.50 am - 12pm.
Teal 62. Shoveler fem ( all the others had left during the night moving back to the Moors ). Greylag c50. coot 12. water rail 4 (3 in the out sluice channel). Snipe 3. lapwing 190. Curlew 15. Green sand 2 (moved off just after first light). BHG 800. Common Gull 4 ( 2ads, 1st winter and 2nd winter. ). LBBG c50. herring gull 10 +. Buzzard 3. sparrowhawk. kestrel. kingfisher. Green woodpecker. great spotted w. stock dove 30. raven 2. Jay. Skylark. fieldfare 35. redwing 150. song thrush 2. Rock pipit. meadow pipit 5. grey wag 2. pied wag 4. Stonechat ( very mobile ). Cetti's 2. blackcap. goldcrest 2. treecreeper. Linnet 8. redpoll 35. siskin 3. small numbers overhead of chaffinch and greenfinch. Reed bunting 10 min. Good company with Rob G Spike. a few hours today

a bunch of redpol, looked like a flock of fieldfare, grey wagtail, jack snipe, kestrel and a stonechat briefly. also lots of other things.
