Larus a. argenteus or L.a. argentatus? (1 Viewer)

Hi Keith,

Time of year, mantle tone and primary pattern all point to argenteus..... some intergrades could look similar i guess but certainly not difficult to find local argenteus Herring gulls breeding in Britain with similar primary pattern.

Cheers, Dean

Probably argenteus, on location, p10 tip not completely white with a small black notch on inner web, p5 with a broken black band (argentatus would not have black on p5 or just a small and diffuse spot )
But it's not often possible to tell them apart. This case is borderline

Thanks for your welcome comments guys.. I understand everything you say. I haven't noticed patterning quite like this on argenteus p5 before - hence my post to document it and learn more, particularly with respect to the 'intergrades'.
