peter.jones 5th April self-isolating sightings

Ran my moth trap overnight for an added incentive to get up early.
Live in North Baddesley, just north of Southampton, large village, surrounded by a belt of farmland, woodland, and low grade relict New Forest habitat.
Garden is tiny, but has a brook running nearby and small patch of parkland beyond the garden.
Sat in the garden 7am to 11am with the following sightings:

Blue tit,
great tit,
coal tit.
Long tailed tit,
Jackdaw,
carrion crow
Woodpig
Coll dove
Wren,
song thrush,
robin
Bullfinch
Goldfinch
Starling
Ring Ouzel m 07:30
Blackbird
Rook
Magpie
Chaffinch
Greenfinch
House sparrow
Herring gull
Goldcrest
Nuthatch
Dunnock
Kestrel
Sparrowhawk
Pied wag
Lesser black backed gull
Buzzard

Ring Ouzel totally unexpected, and difficult to find anywhere in the local area. Proves anything is possible with our hobby.
Appeared to fly low from rough area beyond garden into tree tops where I got a good view.

Must try this again! photos of surrounding view. Garden is really small, and very limited view of of sky sadly.

EDIT: for updates see post #41

Richard’s 5th April List

All seen and heard from the house, mostly in the direction shown in the photo, facing East. A typical selection so far today, I’ve been getting between 25 and 30 in recent days and finished with 30 today ( plus an unidentifiable far off hirundine ).
To exercise my brain I decided to paint a simple sort of ‘word picture’ for each species:

Tawny Owl hooting
Sparrowhawk patrolling
Common Buzzard mewing
Black Kite scrounging
Woodpigeon flopping
Black Woodpecker excavating!
Green Woodpecker yaffling
Great Spotted Woodpecker tapping
White Wagtail chiswicking
Robin trilling
Black Redstart crackling
Blackbird chinking
Song Thrush err, singing
Mistle Thrush repeating
Blackcap fluting
Chifchaff chipping
Marsh Tit cheweeting
Coal Tit squeaking
Blue Tit scolding
Great Tit teaching
Nuthatch choochooing
Jay screaming
Carrion Crow cawing
Raven croaking
Chaffinch cascading
Brambling wheezing
Greenfinch snearing
Goldfinch tinkling
Bullfinch meeping
and Yellowhammers cheezing

Not been on our permitted 1 hour and 1km from house exercise yet so hopefully a couple more to add later.
Edit: Just the Black Woodpecker to add from our walk and a Black Kite back at home having a dog fight with two local Buzzards.
First Red Admiral and Brimstone on the walk too!

John A's list (Hong Kong) 5th April

Joining in from Hong Kong (we're all in this together, right?)
I live in a village, with woodland behind the house and scrubby farmland in front.
It's been a gloomy, drizzly day, but that helped to push a few migrants lower, including three new species for my house list. I've been watching on the patio for an hour in the morning and an hour late afternoon, with a couple more species noted incidentally during the day.
It's dark now, so this will probably be all, unless an owl starts calling later this evening.

House Swift
White-breasted Waterhen
Little Egret

Abbadia San Salvatore, Tuscany, Italy. small town at 850 metres altitude. Mostly Chestnut and Austrian Pine mixed woods around town, Beech higher up. 2nd floor flat with small covered (less sky!) balcony at the front looking onto street and more blocks of flats. Back window looks over more flats and mixed woodland. No garden but some space in front of garage. Also observations within the 300 metres radius we are permitted to exercise in.

Strong north-easterly wind didn't make things easier but we can't really complain!
