Wintering flamingos
General areas in bold, towns in italics, street names between straight brackets. Google maps will show you the right area when you use the street and town names.
A good place to find them in winter is the
Krammer-Volkerak area in the southwest, especially just southeast of
Oude Tonge [Lodewijksweg] (I've seen three species there), or in the
Hellegatsplaten area near
Ooltgensplaat [either the Bosweg or (less useful) Steigerdijk], especially most easterly hide (where the Bosweg passes under the highway). Only a few seem to be around now – not the best bet at the moment.
However, large numbers occur around the
IJsselmeer. Possible locations are the
Steile Bank south of
Oudemirdum [Sanfeartsdyk] and the shores of the
Veluwemeer near
Doornspijk [Kerkdijk] and
Nunspeet [Hoge Bijsselse-pad]. I should note I've never been to any of these areas (which is a shame: the Steile Bank is famous!)
Note that the birds always occur in former estuaries, which may be hidden from view by high dykes. Some walking will be necessary.
