I am trying to find any information about where the flamingo's which summer at Zwillbrocker Venn winter, i.e. where they are currently.

Any information appreciated

Hi Mark

In the German mag "Limicola" I read that they winter in the Netherlands. But I can't give you a more detailed information. Perhaps some of our Dutch members can.

I did some research on the net and found a lot of (german) information. Most of the flamingos are Chilean Flamingos (Phoenicotperus chilensis), some are Europeans and there is also one Cuban (Phoenicopterus ruber). Since 1983 the Chileans are breeding on a small island. They were joined later by some Greater Flamingos as well. The American birds are formerly feral birds for sure, and the Germans think that the others are as well, but the don't have a proof for this.

Some numbers (for 2001): 23 Chilean, 8 Greater, 1 Cuban. Breeding success is very low and in some years even zero. Chilean and Greater Flamingos form mixed pairs, so there could be some hybrids around now.
As I said in my first answer, they winter in the Netherlands (see attached map). As the birds don't harm other birds or wildlife and as they are quite popular among the people there, they are left in peace.

Some years ago I saw a Flamingo in Switzerland. He was ringed and so he could be identified as a genuine wild bird, ringed in the Camargue in France.

Wintering flamingos

General areas in bold, towns in italics, street names between straight brackets. Google maps will show you the right area when you use the street and town names.

A good place to find them in winter is the Krammer-Volkerak area in the southwest, especially just southeast of Oude Tonge [Lodewijksweg] (I've seen three species there), or in the Hellegatsplaten area near Ooltgensplaat [either the Bosweg or (less useful) Steigerdijk], especially most easterly hide (where the Bosweg passes under the highway). Only a few seem to be around now – not the best bet at the moment.

However, large numbers occur around the IJsselmeer. Possible locations are the Steile Bank south of Oudemirdum [Sanfeartsdyk] and the shores of the Veluwemeer near Doornspijk [Kerkdijk] and Nunspeet [Hoge Bijsselse-pad]. I should note I've never been to any of these areas (which is a shame: the Steile Bank is famous!)

Note that the birds always occur in former estuaries, which may be hidden from view by high dykes. Some walking will be necessary.

You can keep track of Dutch flamingos here: http://waarneming.nl/soortenlijst.php?diergroep=1&partial_name=flamin&type=0&status=0&werkgroep=
Press the species to get sightings, press the (i) to get details and a Google map.
