Hi all,
I'm a bit confused about Country articles. First, should they even be created? Where should they be placed (category)? Should we make links to them in other articles?
Please, take, Niels' http://www.birdforum.net/opus/Shiny_Cowbird and http://www.birdforum.net/opus/Dominica as examples.

I stand to be corrected, but this is my understanding of how it should work eventually.

'Country' articles will probably have an over-view and list the reserves etc in that country.

Birds will have a link to the main places where they can be seen - actually thinking along the lines of having 'Continent' pages maybe for this (or maybe... "Western Paelearctic" etc)..

I took my lead from the thread with a guide to opus editing (http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=85741), with this quote:

When adding or editing text, make sure that all places, birds, countries, etc are surrounded by [[ and ]]. For example, "This bird is closely related to the [[other bird]], which is more common in [[country]]." This will turn the text into a link to the entry about that place, bird, country etc. As a general rule, any word that is used that could one day become an entry in it's own right should be linked (usually only the first time it occurs).

I think a country description makes more sence for a tiny country like Dominica than it would for Brazil; you probably have national parks that are bigger than this country. However, it would make sence for me that someone made a page on Pantanal (I hope I spell this correctly) with general introduction of the area, and then links to pages with smaller "trips" within that.

For many people, Dominica is a bird location that they go to for one day, sometimes up to a week. I have plans for writing something on the Nature trail at Syndicate in Dominica, either as a paragraph in the Dominica treatment, or more likely as an independent page. One of these days when I have plenty of time

Hi Niels and Delia,
I just think there should be some criteria about location articles creation. I don't know whether I should put links in every word or expression referring to locations of any scales, or only to countries or parks for example. Taking Niels situation above, should I create a link or articles to Brazil, or is it too big to have a simple article?
Anyway I'll put country names between [[ and ]] in the next articles I edit.

Some of us are currently discussing this issue.

My general advice on location entries is not to do anything structural until a consensus has been reached. Otherwise you might find your hard efforts being removed later by an editor, if an adverse policy is decided upon.
