Clay-colored Sparrow
This has been a good year for this scarce migrant with multiple sightings in San Mateo County this Fall. They can be easily confused with other species especially Brewer's Sparrow and Chipping Sparrow. Note the pale lores and unstreaked gray nape.- jmorlan

Interesting that there were about 40 females in this area, but not one male. Males are all black. Then somewhere else I saw about 30 male red-winged blackbirds on a lawn but not one female.
