    Start of the end

So dawned my last day in Australia. And to begin it Alex and June took me to Herdsman Lake, another of the many lakes in the area which are excellent for Birdwatching; you can see many of them described in our Opus article: https://www.birdforum.net/opus/Perth_area No sooner had I got out of...

..... but just across the road

If only I'd realised that, just across the road was a little flock of Yellow-rumped Thornbill. At least these were mainly in the open!!!

    Hard to catch

Although we saw/heard quite a few birds at the windfarm, I didn't manage any pictures of them. After admiring the wonderful views from the cliffs we then headed for the Vancouver Peninsula, which was back to Little Grove and further on. The first stop where we could see across to Albany and...

So... my final day has arrived, for I leave Australia in the evening for the long flight home. But Alex and June hadn't finished with me quite yet and took me to another of the large lakes in Perth, and their favourite too. We'd just got out of the car when I spotted a little flock of...

We then moved along to Point Possesion, which was close by Frenchman's Cove that we been to a few days before. This is an oddly shaped peninsula that reaches across the bay toward Albany and very nearly closes off Princess Royal Harbour from the ocean. There's an old quarantine station there...

Sitting inside our caravan one morning while away last weekend, we notice 2 of these little birds outside. As they moved out of sight, I was able to go outside and get close enough for a reasonable capture, at least enough to identify as Yellow-rumped Thornbills. One other distance sighting in...
  23. Largest Thornbill

    Largest Thornbill

Yep, I've gone from smallest Aussie bird (posted a couple of days ago) to yellowest thornbill (yesterday's post), to largest thornbill, all sighted within an hour of each other. This Yellow-rumped Thornbill was feeding on the ground & hiding amongst the grass, then quickly disappeared. It is...

    'Me or him!'

Because of everyone at home sick I wasn't able to get out today except around the house.....these guys are frequent visitors to my pine trees and when I went into one of the horse yards they came out and sat on the fence waiting for insects to grab, this one didn't seem to mind that I was there...
