Acorn woodpecker on a tree Snag

Took a few pictures of this acorn woodpecker on a dead tree snag--and in this photo, if you look closely, you will see the woodpecker has a tasty morsel in its beak. Also, what's cool is, you can observe the classic woodpecker balancing act - the feet are up high, nearly level with the beak -...

Acorn woodpecker with an acorn in his beak!

Saw this male acorn woodpecker during a morning walk in Southern Oregon; at the moment I snapped this particular photo, he happened to have half of an acorn in his beak!

    Clown-faced

Hard not to think of clowns when I meet Acorn Woodies. It's not just the "face paint". It's also the "clown-car horn beeps" of their calls (https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Acorn_Woodpecker/sounds#) :D Almost caught up browsing BF. Now I have to get out and finish...

    Storing Acorns in Telegraph Pole

Acorn Woodpecker up on the Eugene O'Neill (American Playwright) Foundation Estate in Danville, Ca. Very good place for Acorn woodpeckers, with many split trees from overstorage of acorns.

    Acorn Woodpecker leucistic

I went to Middletown to check on the two leucistic acorn woodies and found them to be doing their normal duties around their granary tree. When I was later going through my photos, I found I'd captured this one on a tree just across a small creek from the granary. It shows the burned tree bark...

They normally stay in the trees or on top of the power poles in our neighborhood but this one landed on our deck. He made the rounds of the feeders and branches attached to the railing which gave me some nice camera time up close.

    Acorn Woodpecker

Testing out the new-to-me camera today, the zoom function in particular. It doesn't hold at full zoom, but this somehow maintained some focus. Shot taken at Mariposa Cemetery, where a flurry a bird chatter produced scant little to get in the viewfinder. The acorns were everywhere, taunting me. I...
  16. Acorn Woodpecker leucistic

    Acorn Woodpecker leucistic

We took a drive through the south end of our county that was hit the hardest by the Valley wildfire last September. It's very depressing to actually see the devastation but I was dying to see if the two leucistic woodys I'd photographed earlier in the year had survived the firestorm. The news...
  17. Acorn Woodpecker (Composite)

    Acorn Woodpecker (Composite)

I put this together to differentiate the gender of this woodpecker. If you look at the head of each bird you'll see a subtle difference in the color pattern. Do you see it? The bird on the post has a black band bisecting the white of it's face, and the red crown. This denotes it as a female...
  18. Acorn Woodpecker (Female)

    Acorn Woodpecker (Female)

From my previous post of a Common Raven, you can see the dog food used to pull them in. A side benefit is the attraction of woodpeckers. This female Acorn Woodpecker is just about to make contact with the fence post. Notice the vertical orientation of the body. This is the way they always land...

These woodys stay in the same area of a nearby park and have always been ready to pose for lots of pictures while allowing me to walk up close.

    Just one more....

Hope you don't mind another image of the rare leucistic bird. My friend who first spotted the bird now tells me there are two white ones on that granary. I'm going to make another trip soon!
  22. Leucistic Acorn Woodpecker

    Leucistic Acorn Woodpecker

I was hoping for an albino woody but this one had just a small bit of the black coloring on its wings and near the eyes. This was my second trip to a remote part of our county to spot it but it was exactly where I was told it had previously been spotted. The bird on the left shows what it...

    A New Visitor

For the last three days this female has been coming to our deck for her share of the peanuts. She prefers the nuts that have fallen down the crack of log but sometimes will eat from the top. She also doesn't mind that I'm on the other side of the window just a few feet away.
