Brunnich's Guillemot - life is just a yawn!

These birds are clumsy on ice and the land, and are not the strongest flyers around, but underwater they are as fast and agile as penguins in their pursuit of their main food - Arctic Cod. And they have so little contact with humans that we could approach very closely in our zodiacs.

Atlantic Puffin - beauty in the eye of the beholder!

Apparently this beak serves no purpose other than to advertise good genes; sort of like: "I've survived despite this massive encumbrance, so clearly I've got some pretty good characteristics that you'll want to pass on to your own offspring!"

Brunnich's Guillemot - Penguins of the North

These birds breed in their tens of thousands on the cliffs of the Svarlbard Archipelago, north of the Arctic Circle. Clumsy on ice, and only low-altitude flyers, they are fast and agile underwater swimmers.

Fearless Fulmars

These Northern Fulmars, bobbing gently on the Arctic Ocean only 960km from the North Pole, allowed us to cruise quietly amongst them in our zodiacs. Both light and blue morphs are present.
