At first glance these guys look similar to our Green-backed Heron, and for a long time they were considered to be conspecific with the Green-backed Heron, but the much darker chest is definitely a distinguishing feature of this species.

Paddy Birds are common in rice fields and next to ponds and lakes. Perched on a neem (Azadirachta indica) tree, the same Pond Heron looks nice, even if different.
The Paddy Bird (a.k.a Indian Pond Heron) is a common inhabitant of pond banks and crop fields. They thrive even around urban water bodies. Here is one individual... on the lookout. Seems to have one eye looking for prey and the other wary one... fixed on me.
