Many people believe owls are strictly nocturnal. But this beautiful Barred Owl was actively hunting yesterday morning at 9:00 AM and was kind enough to allow me a few good shots before it decided to fly off.
And here's a funny tip that isn't very well-known: If you are watching or photographing...
This is the larger of two Barred Owls we have. They have a couple of perches overlooking our pond. We watched the larger one (I'm assuming the female), get a muskrat that probably weighed more than she does, and fly back to the nest not too far from where she is here.
This Barred Owl caused quite a stir along the boardwalk of the Hellcat Interpretive Trail at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Newburyport, Massachusetts.
I have been visiting this site since 2004 and find a Barred Owl at the same spot wintertime.
It might be the same Owl as it perches within the same 5 m circle. They can live up to 23 years.
This Barred Owl spent nearly two hours in our back yard today taking a nap and also scoping out the scene for something to eat. I was able to get underneath the tree where it sat perched during that time. It didn't seem to mind me capturing images of it. This is the best of the bunch handheld.
This owl hung around the bird sanctuary most of the day, sleeping and grooming. As it got closer to sunset, he flew lower in the tree (great for photos!) and started watching a squirrel intently.
Being a parent is hard work. This is one of the parents of the Owlet I posted recently. They came back to my yard for some reason and the parent then settled down for a nap.
This is the parent and apparently the mother of the owlet, the picture of which I have just posted. Open that image as there is a long story attached to that image.
This little guy is setting in a tree in my front yard and has been for three days. The lady next door brought him, I'll use "him" because I don't know what he is, over three nights ago and wanted my help with him. He looked healthy to me, so I suggested we take him to my backyard and...
My daughter saw this beautiful Barred Owl off to the side of our driveway in the woods behind our house. She was sweet enough to call her bird loving Dad who was able to sneak up and get some pictures.
Around dusk I happened to notice a rather plump rat grazing beneath our feeders. I wasn't sure what I was going to do about him. Shortly thereafter, my wife noticed this barred owl sitting on a power line above the feeders. Maybe the rat problem will solve itself!
Not great quality, this was...
Barred owl on a backyard post. This was taken as the sun was setting with a little Sony point and shoot with 3X zoom, so this is as close as I could get. He was a fair distance away. Had to crop it some to get in reasonably close enough to see the owl! lol
All in all though, I think iit turned...
This was likely a once in a lifetime occurrence. I took this a few years ago. When this happened, the sun was down and there was the barest hint of light in the western sky, it was quickly heading toward complete nightfall. I was just going to the front door of the house when I thought I saw...
