  1. A bit of rarity for us! Franklin's Gull

A bit of rarity for us! Franklin's Gull

I was able to capture this Franklins Gull down on the beach this last weekend. We get a lot of Laughing and Bonaparte's, but this is the very first time seeing these here in Mexico. The shot was from a pretty long ways away, but it came ok for identification.

Looking down on the arroyo - Spiney-tailed Iguana

Growing up to 36", these Baja iguanas tend to take over a woodpecker nest site, usually in a Cardon Cactus. This pair had their location high above the arroyo I was camped in. Not being early risers, every morning about 9AM they would poke their heads out, climb up on the top of the cactus...

Very well camouflaged - Gray Cracker

Another great butterfly, while sitting around waiting for the birds to show! For those of you in the know, please feel free to correct my identification of this butterfly. I am basing this on the Kaufman Field guide, North American, Page 216.

All puffed up, and no where to go!

This Western Scrub-Jay, from the califonica group, sub species A.c. hypoleuca, was getting all puffed up, I think just to cool down. Our summer heat is starting to get here, and the thermometer showed 106 F yesterday, at 2500 feet. One of the ranch hands said it showed 110 on his wall...
  7. Savannah - Large-billed Sparrow

    Savannah - Large-billed Sparrow

Sorry about the grainy photo, but I was running out of light and really wanted to capture this sparrow. According to the Opus, this Large-billed Sparrow, Passerculus rostratus is a split off from the Savannah Sparrow. There are two Savannah's in our area, The P.s. rostratusa and the P.s...
  8. The Sentinal!! California Quail

    The Sentinal!! California Quail

Another early morning image, this California Quail jumped up on the broken old cactus, and keep watch over the covey!!
  9. Loggerhead Shrike

    Loggerhead Shrike

Early morning light, on a beautiful Loggerhead as it gets ready to hunt the many grasshoppers this spring, that the Mexican Baja has provided! While I usually see them with a lizard, we were over run with grasshoppers from a very wet period.
