belted kingfisher

  1. Belted Kingfisher

    Belted Kingfisher

I was surprised by seeing where this Kingfisher had chosen to place itself. That is the main reason I uploaded, I do not think it is the greatest portrait ever.
  2. Belted Kingfisher

    Belted Kingfisher

This is the only species of kingfisher found over most of the continental US. This female was perched on the spire of a small yacht overlooking the harbor. Males lack the chestnut band across the breast. Although birds on the West coast average slightly larger, there is apparently too much...

    Belted Kingfisher - late supper

This guy showed up for just a few seconds on this dead tree at the edge of large pond. Can't say I was all that ready for him. First time to capture though.

    Belted Kingfisher

Beautiful sunny day, but too much for my cell phone's camera to handle well. This guy was very photogenic. Chattered the whole time, and treated us to a variety of antics. Fun bird.

She dropped her catch into the stream.

    Belted Kingfisher 1

This Kingfisher nailed a crawdad/crayfish. She smacked it against the branch several times, apparently in an effort to kill it. Unfortunately, she dropped it. The next photo shows her peering down towards the stream, as her catch drifts away. She was not too happy about the situation. I...

    Belted Kingfisher

This photo was taken at a pond on the north end of Big Talbot Island State Park known locally as "Spoonbill Pond". There were a pair of Belted Kingfishers flying the area and cackling. Beautiful birds. This is my first half descent shot I've been able to get.
