Frequently seen bird in our area, not common to see the colourful back shine through like this though.

Poof... This mornings snow a bit deeper than she expected.

Note progression of balding on neck and chest. All flight feathers are present, however, and she appears to be in good health, successfully reproduces every year, and isn't ostracized by the other typical magpies in the area. I first saw her in 2012, so she's been here for at least three seasons.

Out in the country if you stop your car it's "Goodbye Magpie". Within the town of Jasper it's "Please don't step on our Magpies".

This bird was hanging around the Wraith Falls Picnic Area, possibly to find some human left-overs, but there were very few human picnickers in mid-winter, so pickings were slim.

About 20" (50cm). Quite an excellent scavenger.

I love magpies! They are quite a bunch of characters, at least the ones that live in my neighborhood are! This one just cracked open a peanut and got a peanut hair stuck in its "mustache", if you will ;)
