black-faced woodswallow

  1. Not so common

    Not so common

The afternoon we decided to drive around the reserve, mainly on the Airport Road. A male Black-faced Woodswallow was sitting on the top of some bushes. I only saw two of these on my holiday, the other was a female.

    Another dead tree fan!

Some female Black-faced Woodswallows were on yet another dead tree. I had to do a bit of work on this picture as it was very much against the light with hardly any detail.

I didn't notice the significance of this photo till I got home. The bird is regurgitating a pellet of unwanted insect remains.

The outback can be a pretty harsh place in a drought but the death of one creature can provide food for another , in this case insects for this Woodswallow.
  6. A new woodswallow

    A new woodswallow

Not the best of pictures, but a new woodswallow for me. This is a Black-faced Woodswallow, at bit distant and high in a tree. Nice bird though and it doesn't appear to be the most commonly seen one. This is the first picture to come in for nearly 2 years.

These Woodswallows were feeding in a small Eucalypt tree, possibly feeding on lerps, giving us two rather different aspects of the species.

Our trip to Aldinga Scrub provided our second encounter with some Black-faced Woodswallows, the previous being nearly 2 years ago. On the Saturday,we saw a few sitting on a power line. Sunday produced a number close at hand on the edge of the Scrub. Wonderful to watch. When roosting, they...
