black-headed grosbeak

  1. Black-headed Grosbeak

    Black-headed Grosbeak

More often heard than seen, but today we had two immatures and one adult male visiting our suet feeders. They are summer breeders in our area wintering in Mexico. This one is in a female-like plumage but note the pale tips to the primary (flight) feathers indicating they were recently grown and...
  2. Black-headed Grosbeak

    Black-headed Grosbeak

It takes two years before adult males get their full orange and black plumage. Often heard singing loudly from within the canopy of tall trees, they can be frustratingly difficult to see. This male represents the nominate Rocky Mountain race, in which the male lacks the orange stripes on the...

    Black-headed Grosbeak

It takes two years before adult males get their full orange and black plumage. Often heard singing loudly from within the canopy of tall trees, they can be frustratingly difficult to see. In our area, males arrive in early April from wintering grounds in Mexico. Females usually arrive a month or...

    Black-headed Grosbeak — Handsome Male

This is one of two posts today, a male and female Black-headed Grosbeak. These Grosbeaks are a dominate presence at my feeder station. They love the black sunflower seeds and the seed stacker cake. Now and then they will bathe in the nearby water. It’s early in the season so I think they are all...

    Black-headed Grosbeak

This is March 26 and today this handsome boy returned from his winter migration to Mexico. There is a pretty lady with him and I’ll post a picture of her soon.

This male represents the far West race, "P. m. maculatus." In the nominate Rocky Mountain race, the male lacks the orange stripes on the sides of the head seen here.

    First of the season...

A few days late but this male first went for the sunflower seeds and later a nice bath.

    Black-Headed Grosbeak

These are among my favorite summer migrants. They are a little shy, but if food is available (they like suet, and seed, keep the seed near a bush, or tree, so they can duck for cover) you can attract them.

I'm hoping to see little ones in the future since this female has picked a beautiful mate.

We now have a pair coming up to the deck to eat the sunflower seeds. This male is showing all his pretty colors.

    First for the Season

This male arrived a few days ago but I couldn't get an image until yesterday when he landed closeby.

    Just one more...

I can't help it, I love these grosbeaks. Not as much coloring as the male but this female is still pretty to me.
