Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata subsp. cyanotephra) Sexes similar. Wichita Falls, Lucy Park, Wichita County, Texas, USA. Manicured park in the floodplain of the Wichita River with small remnant riparian forest at ca. 283 m (928 ft) elevation.
Sorry, another jay. Couldn't help it, like the dynamic pose and the way this turned out.
I'm having trouble with my computer keyboard. It's gone intermittent. Sometimes it will work, sometimes not. Until I get that resolved I'll be making comments on my tablet. That takes forever though, so i...
I was out in the yard doing things, and the hairy woodpeckers were flying out of the woods and to the peanut butter feeders almost as regular as clockwork. They didn't mind me being there at all, and they were flying quite close as they passed me. I thought this might be a great opportunity to...
We have several families of downy and hairy woodpeckers on the go in the area. The parent woodies are making constant trips to the feeders, and they want, and sometimes DEMAND peanut butter. So I've been putting more than usual out lately. The blue jays are quite happy with this arrangement...
Blue Jay above the feeders, just after giving a loud cry that's impossible to describe, (a fluting cry maybe?), in order to scare everyone away. Here he crouches down to get a clearer view of the feeders to see if he was successful, and at the same time keep an eye on me.
Blue Jays are boldly coloured and sleek birds. They are quick witted, highly intelligent, clever, and always give the impression they're among the smartest of birds.....and then there's this guy.....
This shot was taking in the middle of a blizzard from last winter. The air was white with snow and the window I was shooting through was slightly steamed up. Sort of gives an ethereal atmosphere to the photo. Last winter was a very harsh and cold one, and the jays were here visiting the feeders...
Normally very skittish, this blue jay paused for a while and enjoyed the morning sun. He still knew I was there, watching him through the window, and he was careful to keep an eye on me.
Unfortunately for many days the weather has been bad, the sky constantly overcast, and the light abysmal. Which of course results in slow shutter speeds and dozens of blurred and very noisy bird shots. It's driving me crazy! But, every now and then, a bird such as this jay will sit still and...
This female cardinal does not tolerate any Blue Jays to feed with her on the platform feeder. I was very surprised to see her take them on, flash her tail and chase them from the feeder.
A shot from very early this morning at a sharp angle through a none too clean window. Maybe it's going to be a tough winter. The blue jays seem very intent on filling their crops, then going off to deposit it somewhere, then before long coming back for more. This goes on all day. They only grab...
This Blue Jay taken on a backyard perch where most of the year I get a dark green or almost black background but in the fall it comes to life with this golden color.
Not many new birds around the feeders lately. But the blue jays are a constant. So I might be posting a lot of blue jay photos over the next few weeks. I hope you all can put up with looking at this homely bird. lol
