It's bad enough that the blue jay comes in and steals most of the peanut butter. But does he have to rub it in by tossing it in the air and catching it right in front of me? lol
Firstly, let me thank all who view and comment on my photos, I appreciate your kind words.
Secondly: I haven't been able to find the time lately for bird photos or getting on this site to comment on YOUR fabulous photos, but I hope to be able to do more of both soon.
Thrirdly: No matter how...
The blue jay had the high ground, but this big hairy woodpecker female is pretty intimidating. They were trying to bluff each other away from the peanut butter at the top of this feeder, and sat frozen like this, not moving a muscle and staring at each other for a good two minutes. The tension...
My idea of drilling holes in a piece of wood and hanging it and putting seeds in the holes was to give smaller birds like chickadees, finches and nuthatches a chance at the food before the big birds vacuumed it all up. It's worked well against the doves, but the blue jays are another matter...
Bad Boy Blue delicately holding his stolen treasure. Sometimes it's a struggle to get peanut butter to the intended diners with these birds around. But I don't mind. These birds are fun to watch and a treat to the eye, even scruffy ones like this guy!
I spread a bit of peanut butter on this broken bird bath base so our chipmunk can get some. But sometimes this blue jay steals it before Chip can get any. I spoke to him as I took this. "Bad boy, Blue!" He looks a bit startled and guilty here, don't you think?
Here's the blue jay we started calling Baldy, the one I suspect had moulted all his head feathers at once, which made him look like a mini vulture. Can't call him baldy much longer, as he's starting to feather in now, and it shouldn't be much longer before he starts looking more normal.
For such a common bird, I haven't seen many around my yard lately. I suppose nesting and raising young has them busy. Maybe they'll come around more as the fledglings get active. In fact, I think this is a young jay, it was very uncertain about the feeders, but eventually figured it all out...
I kept hearing an odd call coming from a large tree in my yard. I had no idea what it was, until this blue jay appeared carrying a beakful of juicy grasshoppers, and then went up into the tree and gave them to another blue jay.The odd calls turned out to be a blue jay fledgling. Unfortunately...
This guy landed close by as well, which is unusual as they are very timid about now. As with the purple finch in the previous photo, this one landed on my step ladder, which for some reason all the birds love as a feeding platform.
I impaled an unshelled peanut onto a sharp, broken off twig in an awkward to get at place on this tree. It was on there pretty good, and after several unsuccessful attempts to pluck it off, this bluejay took a short break to puzzle out what to do next. Here he is taking a look at the peanut...
Well Peeps,
We have just watched 5 0f the 10 Blue Tit eggs hatch on the cam in our nest box...Such compelling viewing, as the parents are working really hard already.
Messing around trying for blue jay flight shots again. But it was a dull overcast day and I just couldn't get a decent quality shot. Not enough light. They all come out sort of grainy and a bit out of focus like this one. That's bridge cameras for ya! lol. It's fun to try though. I'm going to...
