My plan was to capture a blue jay at full wing spread just before it lands, because it's wing and tail and belly feathers are a flash of sleek, beautiful colors when it happens. Little did I know I'd be catching a jay that looks like it could be a cast member from The Walking Dead! My wife saw...
Spend a little time yesterday trying to catch some of the Blue Jay comings and goings at a feeder. Got a few shots but nothing of high quality. Sort of like this one though.
I was standing on my front step hoping to get some shots when this blue jay landed in a tree about 15 feet from me. It sort of hunkered there, so I started talking to it in soothing tones. Normally they take off in a panic at the presence of a human, but this one just sat there for a while...
This Blue Jay was happily feeding on a suet cake, but kept looking over his shoulder occasionally, into the woods across the road from my place. He's stare for a moment each time, his crest raising then flattening then raising. Then he'd go back to eating. This happened four or five times. I...
Yes, the blue jay is curious about something. Maybe he's looking at where the one legged starling dropped his peg leg. Actually the starling has two legs, you just can't see one of them here. lol
EDIT: On closer inspection I can see the starling's left foot being held up near his body.
I was standing on my doorstep with my camera after just filling all the feeders. This jay came along and landed on a branch only about 10 feet from me, and I think he wanted me to leave.
Normally when I take a photo of a jay I try to get it in profile. However the look of impatient disapproval...
the day before the snowstorm was brilliantly sunny, and all the birds were feeding like crazy. I think they knew what was coming. This jay was no exception as every time I put peanut butter out he was all over it. Here he is at the base of the tree after knocking a large gob of peanut butter out...
After the squabble for the suet was settled, one jay started feeding on it while this jay went higher in the tree, his crest semi-raised, and constantly looked about. The starling was still hanging around nearby so I guess this guy was keeping an eye on him. After a time the two jays switched...
Caught sight of a starling and a blue jay jousting over who would be the next one on the suet cake. I happened to snap this in a more calm moment, but I was hoping some more action would take place, because they were fairly evenly matched and neither seemed inclined to back down. Unfortunately...
Had a major influx of blue jays this morning. 8 or ten of them. Usually they're pretty jumpy and will take off, at the slightest human movement, even if they see it through a window. But today they seemed a lot more willing to stick around when I stuck my camera out. For which I'm glad. When...
Long range shot.
I tied a suet cake to this tree in such a way as to hopefully keep the larger birds off so the chickadees would have a chance at it. However this Jay figured things out very quickly. lol
I don't mind though, they're a nice bit of color to look at this time of year.
