A flock of these magnificent birds was diving for fish right in front of the docks at Morro Bay. Kaufman's guide says they were endangered at one time but made a comeback after DDT was banned. Hurray!
I saw loads and loads of these pelicans on a recent trip to California. I got a bit blaise about them after awhile but I still couldn't resist taking pictures of them.
These photos were taken at Ponce Inlet in Florida.
Beautiful day...It was nice to get a little sun. I took so many photos. I put the rest on my web site, (Two Acre Wood.) I also went to the Everglades. Fun was had by all. And the Pelicans were so much fun to watch.
I watched this brown pelican in Ding Darling NWR dive for food a number of times. I loved this shot of the pelican as he looked straight my way. The colors and detail on his bill amazed me!

Our first morning at La Jolla cliffs gave the most Pelicans but the light was very average. The pose on this one amused me.

Just back from 2 weeks in southern California - great weather, scenery and birding! Managed to get a few images as well ;)
Although this is not an original pose, the classic head-throw of this colourful race of Brown Pelican was high on my list of planned images.

They have been navigators of the seas for millenia. Old, they are, and time has imprinted it with a history that pre-dates man by millions of years. Do it's genes speak to it of a time when there were only vast and rolling seas. Does it have a cellular memory of places that have been rolled up...
Some birds are just taken for granted: sparrows, house finches, many gulls, starlings etc. Pelicans can be in this catagory. I was busy shooting images of ducks and had noticed this large lump of brown hulking on a perch looking intently down at roilling water entering from flood control gates...
Pelicans photographed from balcony at hotel in Mazatlan Mexico. In the evening they would fly by information but I didn't get any real good shots of that.
