    After over 4 weeks of waiting, the eggs (yesterday's post) disappeared and no sign of cracked shell; next day proud parents show off the youngsters. Sadly, a couple of days later they had disappeared (maybe the caracal that roams at night) and the parents wandered about looking forlorn.

    their choice of nest was a small scrape about 3 feet from the edge of the road just where the vineyard starts so for more than 4 weeks (HBW says incubation about 24 days !!!) we and our neighbours tried to protect the nest from the vineyard workers/spraying tractors/dog walkers etc. Exemplary...

    A surprise on one of my last games drives in the Mara was a pair of these Thick-knees. We came across them not long after sun rise, and they gave me a brief chance at a couple of pictures before they decided to walk further away.
