A pair of red-shouldered hawks has built a nest right over a trail in one of our local wetlands - the male was hanging nearby having just fed the female (the remains of the snake meal are on the branch to his right), and was standing guard on a tree across the way.
Rarely do I post my digiscopes at 100% resolution.. any deficiencies immediately noticed. In this third post of the bird for today, I break my "rule of thumb" because it best displays all we can observe in its eye; what I think to be the large Cedar tree to its right, and my house...
Though whimsical, it's interesting to note it keeps its eye stationary throughout, and thus alert, perhaps both to danger and to prey; as this was shortly before it grabbed the salamander, posted a few min. ago.
I was shooting away as it sat in our tree; when it swooped to the ground by the little creek and popped up onto the old stump (Cherry tree growing up from the middle); my first thought a frog, but on photo review I could see the salamander.
Got up early today to find this beauty sat in the tree at the bottom of the garden. We have buzzards around most days, but this is a first for the garden! After the rabbits that have appeared lately I suppose. Looks like a 2cy. Not a full adult for sure as the iris is pale and the breast isn't...
Taken at the Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline at about 60m.
Photo taken with the 1.6x digital teledapter active, through a chain-link fence, and cleaned-up using Topaz DeNoise and Topaz Detail.
I'm quite surprised between the teledapter and the distance the photo came out as well as it did. I...

Thought this was an interesting photo catching the nictitating membrane.
Taken at the Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area (Lake Boris) at over 30m.
A bit surprised I got any shots of this hawk at all...wrong camera settings, long range, and up in the middle of complex tree branches. So glad I did though...this was a day full of birds of prey!
Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline at about 75m.
This hawk was being harassed by three crows, and it was quite the aerial fight. My girlfriend and I tried desperately to keep-up and get photos, but they were really moving and at quite a distance.
This was my best capture.
More field markings on this shot for confirmation. This year there is a dark phase short-tailed hawk, I've seen once kettling with the vultures. I am delighted to see this bird prosper outside of the Everglades.
The Short-tail Hawk is rarely seen perched. I have seen this bird for more than 4 years but never got a photo until last week. It soars high above the tress and then Stoops almost vertically on its prey (birds). It has been known to nest in South Florida but now it range has extended to NE...
