Had a male and female arrive a couple days late from last year but at least they're here. Now I'm watching for the black-chinned hummer to arrive any day now. Both are uncommon sightings for our area but I think most people don't recognize the difference in the species.
I sure was happy to see this little guy return several times this past month. Normally they stay just a day or two. This is the first year I've been able to identify a female that came with him.
Three days late but three of these tiny hummers have been at my feeders for the past two days. They normally come every year (except 2014) and just stay one day so this has been a real treat for me. They are the smallest the smallest breeding bird seen in the U.S.
It was a brilliant day for a walk, the sun was shining and the rain clouds where also around. previous to this image the rain had come down on us for a short time and then the sun came back to warm things up again. These guys where flying through the meadow landing on short shrubs and branches.
The smallest hummingbird in the U.S, a male arrived yesterday, the same date as last year and within a week of previous years since 2008. Considered a rare sighting in our county and last year three came to my feeder. They just stay up to three days but I'm always anxious to see them.
