    DSCN6492.JPG Hen Ca. Quail

This was cropped a bit; they were somewhat distant. Actually, at times I had up to 10 or so in the picture, but they were poorly done, nervous birds about me

    DSCN6477.JPG Immature hen Ca. Quail

I keep returning to this place as patience may help find many birds and other creatures. The Quail I saw out of camera range, and after a bit the covey carefully approached near me
  3. California Quail

    California Quail

The official state bird of California, this is a male. The oddly shaped topknot looks like a single feather, but is actually six overlapping feathers. Although locally common, this iconic species has disappeared from many urban areas such as Golden Gate Park in San Francisco where their decline...

    Pop-up

There's always one on guard duty when a family group is foraging down in the shrubs. Typical to only see the guard, and then get glimpses of the flock dashing from under one shrub (I think Coyote Bush in this instance) to under the next.

    State Bird 3 - Vaktvaktel

Another fascinating behavior trait about these birds is that while a flock is foraging on the ground, usually under shrubs or dense grass, one bird is always up on a post or some other high perch on guard duty, clucking comfortingly or calling out an alarm that sends those below scurrying for...

    State Bird 2

Apparently the woods looked safer than the road, so here he goes, heading for the woods. They have a fascinating gait, a bit like the ballet version of horse riders - their feet go so fast that they seem to be gliding on wheels, or (in the case of the wee chicks) rolling like little fluff balls.

    State Bird 1

I'm still hoping some day to see some of the other quail species in California, but meanwhile I still love seeing California's state bird - here pausing to scope out the woods ahead after crossing the road at The Sea Ranch.

Next trip to California I plan to visit a new park near Sea Ranch. I gather there's a good chance of seeing Mountain Quail there. Meanwhile, I'm happy to see more California Quail |=)|

    Chi-caaa-go!

Actually, this one was quiet, neither clucking nor calling even though it was on guard duty for a flock of a dozen females and chicks. His calm allowed us to get close enough - one step at a time, of course - for a croppable shot at last.
  16. Bunny and friends

    Bunny and friends

at the Sea Ranch community gardens. Not sure what species the bunny is - maybe Jackrabbit (hare)? But the quail are definitely Californians, and that orange blur is a California Poppy.

Haven't had time to get the camera out so here's one from last month.

    California Quail

No matter how many times I've imaged this bird I still an struck by their beauty. Is it any wonder that it is the California state bird.

    Quail with chicks

The chicks are especially cute when newborn - little blobs of down that seem to be rolling more than walking as they scurry to keep up with their parents. These chicks were a bit bigger than that already.
