    Camvasbacl

This Canvasback is another one of our winter visitors that we see very few of. Strange but it has been in the same area as the previously posted Long-tailed Duck and at the same time. Also present there were a Barrows Goldeneye male, and two Red-necked Grebes, all rarities for our area.

Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline at about 10m. Everyone enjoyed the last shot, thought this one showing the female more clearly would be a nice add.

I had 3 life list birds in less than an hour today! In addition to the three I am posting today I also saw a bald eagle, ruddy ducks, lesser scaups, surf scooters, wood ducks, bufflehead ducks, mallards, and a pair of hooded mergansers.

This is a large crop but I was happy to finally get some photos of these pretty ducks. They're a common sight on our lake in the winter but I never seem to find them close to the shore.

The drake is more striking, with his deep red head, but the hen has her own subtle beauty. f8 1/500 ISO 200

After tiptoeing as far out on a mudflat as I could without getting close enough for a really good shot of the canvasback there, he swam closer ... and promptly tucked his head under his wing for a nap. Oh well. So I tiptoed back to the trail and headed back to the car. Then lo and behold, right...

    Bathing buddies

I watched this canvasback for quite a while, inching closer on the mudflats across the creek from him. Apparently this was a pool of clearer water they'd found and I saw up to four species bathing there at once. The cutest ones are of the c'back and willet splashing side by side quite close, but...
