    We encountered this species wherever we went in lowland Costa Rica, especially at shrubby edges of anthropogenic habitats. As its name implies, the plumage is very variable. The taxonomy of the species is problematic.

    Unlike most other owls, this species has deep orange-red eyes. I photographed this bird at night using flash in the vicinity of the lodge.
