Just starting to come into breeding colours .

Had been to Hong Kong for a conference last year. I reached HK the day before and had the afternoon free. So managed to go birding before work started. A great way to postpone jet lag.

I had to switch the D800 to Quiet Mode so as not to disturb this pond heron as it crept closer.

Foraging in a tributary creek on a tidal estuary at low tide. Large molluscs visible in the mud behind. Possibly moulting into breeding plumage.

A Chinese Pond Heron in breeding plumage. Commonly seen in this part of the world.

A nice way to start out a new year of birding here in Japan, a lifer! There's been reports of a Greylag goose and some Rooks here in Okinawa. I set off a few days ago to hunt them down, found the Rooks but dipped on the goose. Driving down one of the small farm roads, this bird flew right in...

I had an early start yesterday and was at one of our favorite spots before sunrise. The light was only good for about 30 mins before the haze got too much for capturing detail. In fact there was a government pollution warning yesterday advising people to stay indoors. Neil.

I missed the pond herons in peak color this summer and this guy has lost most of his. Neil.
