Commonly found throughout much of South Africa. 3 more days to the weekend! How is everyone holding up?

    Male southern double-collared Sunbird

Male southern double-collared Sunbird about to take off - beating wings outstretched, feet leaving its perch. Startled by my presents and the clicking of the camera.

    Southern Double-Collared Sunbird

In Cape town one normally finds the Southern Double-Collared Sunbird wich has a light belly. the photo of the sunbird attached has a dark belly and according to the SASOL Birds of Southern Africa the Sunbird with a dark belly is a Shelleys Sunbird only found north of Africa. Can someone advise...

    Southern Double-collared sunbird

His plumage is a bit scrappy but I liked the setting. A guaranteed sighting at Kirstenbosch. Happy Christmas to all and thanks for all your kind comments.
  6. Southern Double-collared Sunbird

    Southern Double-collared Sunbird

Colors change with the light and background. I think the iridescent blue-green shows better here with the flowers.
  7. Southern Double-collared Sunbird

    Southern Double-collared Sunbird

Sunbirds (Nectariniidae) are an Old World family of brightly colored nectarivores. As with most sunbirds, the colors are light-dependent, iridescent and ephemeral. This species is sometimes called the Lesser Double-collared Sunbird to separate it from the very similar Greater Double-collared...
  8. Southern Double-collared Sunbird

    Southern Double-collared Sunbird

These birds were constantly on the move chasing each other around and the only time they sat still was in the middle of a dark shrub. Quite a challenge!
  9. Southern Double-collared Sunbird

    Southern Double-collared Sunbird

Southern Double-collared Sunbird, much more skittish and harder to photograph than the Orange-breasted!

  11. Lesser (Southern) Double-collared Sunbird

    Lesser (Southern) Double-collared Sunbird

This seems to be a young male. Because of the not so long beak I think it is the Klein-rooibandsuikerbekkie in Afrikaans

    Greater Double-collared Sunbird

A challenging bird to take an image of. Always on the move and very busy. Appreciably larger than the Southern Double-collared Sunbird

not sure which it is, the Greater or the Southern Collared Sunbird

    Juvenile Southern Double-collared Sunbirds

I was waiting for the adult to feed the lower bird when the second juvenile flew in and had a go at him. The strategy of swinging to hang upside down seemed to work - after a few more pecks by both birds the squabble ended!

    Southern Double-collared Sunbird

The light was awful, we were walking in the clouds. The camera chose 3200iso to just get something, so I went for the action shot - the bird has already started take off, the next frame shows the legs up and the wings down on this side of the branch.

    Southern Double-collared Sunbird

Excuse the exposure, but this guy just plonked himself down right in front of me, just fired off a few shots before he flew off. Been trying to crack a closeup of one of these guys for months.
