    long-tailed duck

45 - 50 years ago, we invariably saw several long-tailed ducks, each time we visited the Brauwersdam during the winter. Nowadays, they are apparently rare at this spot (global warming and/or decline?). This single male was spotted there since about a week and attracted several birders. I only...

    My first Long tailed duck

Saw these smart birds for the first time last winter. Very happy:) The word Clangula comes from klang; which I understand is "scream" in Greek. This lead me to listen to its call - one worth listening. (https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Long-tailed_Duck/overview). Two more points...

    Shadowy

And then I hiked out to the harbor at the far side of town. Too bad it was in the shade, and too bad I could only get a view of these two by peering through a chain-link fence as they were at one of the "secure" harbor areas. But still ... always lovely to see Long-tailed Ducks...

    Closer

The female dove, but I did get another shot of the two males showing off those marvelously long tails. They had come just a bit closer to the shore, but then they turned and swam further out again.

    Ducks Ltd.

Just 3 of them, so I guess that's pretty limited. I'd seen a large flotilla of them further in the fjord some days earlier, but they were too far off for my lens. These were closer, though still further out than I would have liked. This was at my last assigned stop on my winter waterbird count...
